Quick Info
On the cold night of December 11, 1996, several independent groups of witnesses driving along the Alaska Highway in Canada’s Yukon Territory saw something extraordinary: an enormous craft, described by many as the size of a football field or larger, moving slowly and silently overhead with rows of bright lights. Some called it a “floating city” or “mothership.” The sightings continued into 1997 and remain one of the best-documented mass UFO events in Canadian history.
What makes this case stand out is the number of unrelated witnesses who gave almost identical descriptions across a wide area, with no conventional explanation ever provided.
A Remote Winter Night in the Yukon
The Yukon in December is bitterly cold, with long nights and very few people on the roads. On December 11, 1996, several families and truck drivers were traveling the Alaska Highway when the sky suddenly lit up with something that didn’t belong there. The temperature was well below freezing, and the northern lights sometimes danced overhead, but this was something completely different.
The Giant Craft Appears
The first group noticed a massive object hovering low over the trees. It had rows of bright white lights along its side and appeared to be at least one kilometre long. It moved very slowly and made no sound at all. Witnesses said it was so large it blocked out the stars behind it. Some described it as rectangular or slightly boomerang-shaped with a dark body and intense lighting that lit up the snow on the ground below.
“It was huge. It blocked out the stars. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. It just floated there like a city in the sky.”
— Witness on the Alaska Highway
Several cars pulled over. People stood in the freezing cold watching the object drift silently overhead for several minutes before it moved off toward the horizon.
Multiple Independent Witnesses
What makes the Yukon sightings so compelling is that completely unrelated groups reported the same thing at roughly the same time across dozens of kilometres. Families in separate vehicles, truck drivers, and even people in small communities all described an enormous, silent craft with bright lights. Some saw smaller objects appearing to enter or exit the larger one. The consistency was remarkable.
“It was like a floating city. The lights were so bright they lit up the snow on the ground. It moved so slowly and quietly, I got chills just watching it.”
— Another independent witness
One witness said the craft was so large that when it passed over their car, it felt like driving under a bridge. Another described seeing what looked like windows or panels along the side, giving the impression of a structured, manufactured object rather than a natural phenomenon.
The Investigation
Canadian UFO researcher Martin Jasek took the case very seriously. Over the following years he conducted extensive interviews with more than 20 independent witnesses, carefully mapping their exact locations along the Alaska Highway and nearby roads. He cross-checked their stories for consistency in time, direction of travel, and description of the object.
Martin discovered remarkably consist accounts of the event between people who had never met each other. Many described the same enormous size, the rows of bright lights, the complete silence, and the slow, deliberate movement. Some witnesses drew sketches that matched almost exactly. He also gathered weather data and ruled out conventional explanations such as aircraft, satellites, or atmospheric phenomena. No official military or aviation authority ever provided a satisfactory answer despite the number of reports.
“The consistency was striking. People from different backgrounds, driving in different vehicles, all described something massive, silent, and structured moving slowly across the sky.”
— Martin Jasek, UFO researcher
Martin published a detailed report with maps, witness drawings, and timelines. His methodical approach turned a collection of individual sightings into one of the strongest mass UFO cases in Canadian history. Even today, his documentation remains the most comprehensive record of what happened that cold December night.
Timeline of the Yukon Sightings
- Evening of December 11, 1996 – Multiple groups on the Alaska Highway see the giant craft.
- During the event – Witnesses pull over and watch the enourmous object for several minutes.
- Throughout 1997 – Additional sightings of similar large objects reported in the region!
- Following years – Martin Jasek conducts detailed interviews and publishes a comprehensive report.
- Today – The case remains unexplained and is considered one of Canada’s strongest mass sightings.
Why This Case Still Matters
The Yukon sightings are remarkable because they involved many unrelated people who all described the same enormous, silent object on the same night. The consistency of the accounts, the lack of any conventional explanation, and the sheer size reported make it one of the most impressive mass UFO events in modern history. It’s a classic example of a “mothership” sized sighting that continues to challenge our understanding of what exactly flies in our skies.

What Do You Think?
After reading the multiple witness accounts from that cold Yukon night, and watching the video above, what’s your reaction? Do you think all those unrelated people really saw a massive unknown craft, or could there be another explanation? Why do you think nothing like this has ever been officially explained? This has to be one of Canada’s most impressive mass sightings, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!
