The Val Johnson UFO Incident: Deputy Sheriff Patrol Car Hit by UFO in 1979

Quick Info

Late on the night of August 27 1979 Marshall County Deputy Sheriff Val Johnson was on routine patrol in rural northwest Minnesota when a brilliant light suddenly shot toward his squad car. The impact knocked him unconscious for nearly forty minutes, damaged the patrol car in several strange ways, and left both his wristwatch and the car clock stopped for exactly fourteen minutes. The damaged 1977 Ford LTD is still on public display today at the Marshall County Historical Society museum.

The Night Patrol Begins

It was a quiet, clear night in the flat farmlands of Marshall County. Deputy Val Johnson, 35 years old, was driving his 1977 Ford LTD patrol car along a desolate stretch of County Road 5 and State Highway 220 west of Stephen, Minnesota. Around 1:40 a.m. he noticed a bright white light hovering low above the road about two to three miles ahead. At first he thought it might be an airplane making an emergency landing or perhaps a car with its high beams on.

The Light Accelerates

Val sped up to investigate. As he got closer the light suddenly accelerated straight toward him at incredible speed. In his own words it went from being far down the road to right in front of him in an instant. The brilliant glow completely engulfed the interior of the patrol car.

“What was there all of a sudden was here.”
- Deputy Val Johnson

He heard the sound of breaking glass and felt an enormous impact. The next thing he remembered was waking up almost forty minutes later with the car sitting sideways across the road, partially in the ditch. Val was dazed, his eyes hurt badly, and he had a bump on his head.

The Damaged Patrol Car

When fellow deputies arrived they found the squad car had skidded roughly 854 feet after the impact and ended up at a ninety-degree angle to the road. The damage was very specific and unusual. The windshield was shattered in a spider-web pattern on the driver’s side, the left headlight and red emergency light were smashed, the hood had a noticeable dent, and both radio antennas were bent backward at odd angles. There was no evidence of another vehicle or any conventional collision.

“Something just hit my car. I don’t know how to explain it. Strange… something attacked my car.”
- Deputy Val Johnson (radio call to dispatch)

Even more puzzling, both Johnson’s Timex wristwatch and the car’s dashboard clock had stopped at the exact moment of impact and were exactly fourteen minutes slow when he regained consciousness. The stopped time matched perfectly between the two devices.

The Aftermath and Physical Effects

Val was taken to the hospital where doctors noted eye irritation consistent with welder’s flash burns. He had bruises and general soreness but no serious injuries. The patrol car was thoroughly examined by investigators from the Center for UFO Studies and local authorities. No radioactivity was detected, but the pattern of damage could not be easily explained by any known earthly cause. Honeywell engineer Roland Wardell later studied the vehicle and concluded that no single conventional explanation accounted for all the different forms of damage.

What Do You Think?

A veteran deputy sheriff on a quiet rural road suddenly hit by a brilliant light that damages his patrol car in very specific ways, knocks him unconscious for nearly forty minutes, and stops both his watch and the car clock for exactly fourteen minutes. The damaged squad car is still preserved and on public display today.

Is this one of the strongest physical-evidence cases in American UFO history, or could there be a more conventional explanation that has simply been overlooked? The combination of a credible law-enforcement witness and clear physical traces still makes the 1979 Val Johnson incident stand out. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this case.
