Artistic reconstruction: Ancient Egyptian sky filled with glowing circles of fire during the reign of Thutmose III, 1480 BCE

The Tulli Papyrus: Ancient Egypt's Mass UFO Sighting in 1480 BCE

Quick Info

Around 1480 BCE, during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III, Egyptian scribes recorded one of the earliest mass UFO sightings in human history. Multiple "circles of fire" appeared in the sky, shining brighter than the sun. They moved erratically, multiplied in number, and eventually ascended into the heavens.

The event was so unusual that the scribes documented it on papyrus. While the original document is now lost, a translated copy survived and has fascinated researchers for decades. Some call it proof of ancient alien visitation. Others argue it's a natural phenomenon or mistranslation. Either way, it's an absolutely wild story from over 3,400 years ago.

The Full Account from the Tulli Papyrus

The translated text describes the event in vivid detail. Here's the key passage:

"In the year 22, of the third month of winter, sixth hour of the day, the scribes of the House of Life found that there was a circle of fire coming from the sky. It had no head, and the breath of its mouth had a foul odor. Its body was one rod long and one rod wide. It had no voice. Their hearts became confused through it, and they laid themselves on their bellies.

Now after some days had passed, these things became more numerous in the sky than ever. They shone more brightly than the sun, and extended to the limits of the four supports of the heavens. Powerful was the position of the fire circles. The army of the Pharaoh looked on with him in their midst. It was after supper. Then these fire circles ascended higher in the sky towards the south. Fish and birds fell from the sky. It was a marvel never before known since the foundation of this land."

The scribes were so disturbed by what they saw that they immediately reported it to the Pharaoh. Thutmose III supposedly ordered incense to be burned and offerings made to the gods in response to the event.

The Controversy: Real Document or Clever Forgery?

Here's where it gets interesting. The original papyrus has never been found. What we have is a copy of a translation made by Prince Boris de Rachewiltz in the 1950s, who claimed he found it in the Vatican archives. Many mainstream Egyptologists are skeptical and believe it may be a hoax or heavily mistranslated. However, the language style matches other authentic Egyptian texts from the period, and the event is described with remarkable consistency.

Supporters point out that the description, silent, glowing objects that multiply, move strangely, emit a foul odor, and cause fish and birds to fall from the sky, matches many modern UFO reports. The fact that it was recorded by official scribes of the House of Life (ancient Egypt's version of scientists/historians) gives it extra weight.

Legacy in 2026

More than 3,400 years later, the Tulli Papyrus remains one of the most fascinating ancient accounts of unknown objects in the sky. Whether it's a genuine record of a mass sighting, a mistranslated natural event, or an elaborate hoax, it continues to spark debate and wonder. In our current era of UAP disclosure, this ancient Egyptian report feels surprisingly relevant. It reminds us that humans have been looking up at the sky, seeing things they couldn't explain, and writing them down for thousands of years.

Maybe the circles of fire really were visitors from elsewhere. Or maybe they were something even stranger. Either way, the Tulli Papyrus stands as one of history's earliest "what the hell was that?" moments, and that's pretty awesome.
