Ships in the Sky (218 BC, Italy): Phantom Fleets Over Ancient Rome

Quick Info

More than 2,200 years ago, during one of the most dangerous moments in Roman history, people across Italy looked up and saw something impossible: entire fleets of ships gleaming in the sky. The Roman historian Livy recorded this extraordinary event in his monumental History of Rome writings.

It happened in 218 BC, right as Hannibal was invading Italy with his elephants and army during the Second Punic War. The specific record of "phantom ships gleaming in the sky" (Latin: navium speciem de caelo adfulsisse: "a spectacle of ships gleamed in the sky") comes from Titus Livius (Livy) in his monumental work Ab Urbe Condita (History of Rome), Book 21, chapter 62.

Rome on the Brink

The year was 218 BC. Hannibal Barca, and his elephants, had just crossed the Alps with his Carthaginian army and was marching through northern Italy, defeating Roman forces in battle after battle. Rome was terrified by this stage of the war. The Republic was facing an existential threat, and the people were desperately looking for any sign from the gods.

And then...

The Night the Sky Filled with Ships

In that atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, strange omens began appearing all over Italy. Livy lists many of them, a six-month-old baby crying “Victory!” in the marketplace, stones falling from the sky, lightning striking temples without warning. But one sighting stood out above the rest.

“Phantom ships had been seen gleaming in the sky.”
— Livy, Ab Urbe Condita

Multiple people reported seeing what looked like fleets of ships shining brightly in the heavens. The “phantom ships” appeared to glide across the sky as if sailing on invisible water. Some witnesses described them as glowing or on fire. The phenomenon was seen by enough people that it was recorded as an official prodigy, a divine sign that the gods were trying to communicate something important.

What Did the Romans Make of It?

To the Romans, this wasn’t just a weird light show. Everything unusual in the sky or on Earth was considered a “prodigy”, a warning or message from the gods. The Senate would consult priests and oracles to interpret these signs. In times of war, such omens were taken extremely seriously. They often led to public rituals, sacrifices, or even changes in military strategy.

The appearance of entire fleets in the sky during Hannibal’s invasion must have felt especially ominous. Was it a sign of impending defeat? A warning from the gods? Or perhaps a glimpse of something far stranger?

Other Ancient “Sky Ships”

Livy wasn't the only one to record UFOs back then. Both Pliny (23/24-79 AD) and Plutarch (45–120 CE) also recorded what we would call today mass UFO events, and also UFO crashes. This wasn’t the only time Livy mentioned strange objects in the sky. He records similar events in other years, including “ships” or “fleets” appearing in the heavens.

Ancient writers from other cultures have also described glowing objects or formations that looked like vessels sailing through the air on multiple occasions. It really does make you wonder, were people seeing back then the exact same kind of phenomenon we are seeing thousands of years apart?

What Could They Have Actually Seen?

Modern readers naturally wonder, were these just unusual cloud formations lit by the setting sun? Mass hysteria during wartime stress? Or could people in 218 BC have witnessed something truly anomalous? The fact that it was recorded alongside other specific prodigies suggests it was considered genuinely unusual even by Roman standards.

Why This Ancient Account Still Matters

The “Ships in the Sky” report is one of the earliest written descriptions we have of what sounds very much like a mass sighting of structured aerial objects. It shows that people have been seeing strange things in the heavens for thousands of years, long before airplanes, drones, or modern expectations of what UFOs should look like.

Whether you interpret it as a natural phenomenon, a psychological event, or something more mysterious, it remains a fascinating glimpse into how our ancestors tried to make sense of the unknown. And it was an important enough event for Livy to record it in his writings.

What Do You Think?

After reading Livy’s account, and watching the video, what’s your reaction? Do you think he was describing real unknown objects in the sky, or was it just an unusual cloud formation amplified by fear during wartime?

If indeed people 2,200 years ago were seeing these “phantom ships,” in the skies then that only adds more credibility that UFOs have a very, very long history of visiting Earth and didn't start in the 1940s, right?
