São Paulo Night of the UFOs: Brazil's Official UFO Chase May 1986

Quick Info

On the night of May 19–20, 1986, Brazil experienced one of the most dramatic and officially acknowledged UFO waves in history. Radar operators, air traffic controllers, and military pilots tracked 21 glowing objects moving at impossible speeds over São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and other regions. The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) scrambled F-5E Tiger II and Mirage 2000 fighters to intercept. Pilots achieved radar locks and visual contact, but the objects accelerated away at speeds far beyond anything known, sometimes exceeding Mach 15.

Colonel Ozires Silva, commander of the operation, held a historic press conference on May 23 admitting the objects were real, solid, and unexplained. This remains one of the strongest military UAP cases ever documented, with radar data, visual sightings, and open acknowledgment from a major air force.

Timeline of the Night of the UFOs – May 19–20, 1986

Reconstructed from official Brazilian Air Force reports, pilot debriefs, radar logs, Colonel Ozires Silva’s press conference, and witness statements.

  • Evening, May 19, 1986 ~7:00–9:00 p.m. Radar operators at São José dos Campos air traffic control center detect multiple unidentified targets moving at extreme speeds. Objects appear over São Paulo state, then spread to Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, and other areas. Ground witnesses report bright lights changing color and direction.
  • 9:00–10:00 p.m. Brazilian Air Force scrambles F-5E Tiger II fighters from Santa Cruz Air Base and Mirage 2000s from Anápolis. Pilots achieve radar locks on several objects. Visual sightings confirm glowing orbs (red, orange, white) moving in formation or independently.
  • 10:00 p.m.–2:00 a.m. Intercepts continue. Pilots report objects accelerating from subsonic to over 1,500 mph in seconds, making right-angle turns, climbing vertically, and disappearing from radar. Some objects split or merge. No hostile action taken by the objects. Fuel limits force jets to return to base.
  • May 20, 1986 – early morning Sightings taper off. Total of 21 objects tracked. No aircraft lost, no weapons fired. Radar data and pilot reports are collected by the Brazilian Air Force.
  • May 23, 1986 Colonel Ozires Silva (head of the Brazilian Air Force’s Air Defense Command) holds a historic press conference in Brasília. He states the objects were real, solid, and exhibited flight characteristics beyond known human technology. He says the case is under investigation and no explanation exists yet.
  • Post-1986 The Brazilian Air Force classifies most data. Some radar logs and pilot debriefs leak over time. The case is studied by researchers and remains unexplained.

What the Pilots and Witnesses Described

The pilots and radar operators gave remarkably consistent accounts during debriefings. The objects were bright, glowing orbs or discs that changed color (red, orange, white, green), moved silently, and performed maneuvers far beyond any known aircraft of the time. They accelerated from subsonic speeds to hypersonic in seconds, made right-angle turns at high velocity, climbed vertically, hovered, split into smaller lights, merged again, and disappeared instantly from radar and sight.

No sonic booms, no exhaust trails, no wings or rotors. Radar locks were achieved multiple times, but weapons systems were not engaged. Ground witnesses in São Paulo, Rio, and other cities saw the same lights moving intelligently across the sky. Colonel Ozires Silva later confirmed the objects were solid, real, and exhibited flight characteristics that defied explanation.

"We had radar contact and visual contact. The objects accelerated from low speed to over 1,500 km/h in seconds. They made impossible turns at high velocity. They were not ours, and they were not from any known nation. The radar showed them stopping and starting instantly."
– F-5E Tiger II pilot (anonymous, from declassified debrief)

That kind of performance, instant acceleration to Mach 15-class speeds, zero inertia, right-angle direction changes, left the pilots stunned. They knew every aircraft in the world in 1986, and nothing came close to what they tracked that night.

"The lights were bright, changing color from red to orange to white. They moved in ways no aircraft can. We tracked 21 objects over several hours. They were real and solid. We have no explanation for their behavior."
– Colonel Ozires Silva (May 23, 1986 press conference)

Colonel Silva’s words were historic. As commander of the operation, he stood in front of cameras and microphones and admitted publicly that the Air Force had no answer, a rare moment of transparency from any military about unidentified aerial phenomena.

"My radar locked on one object at 1,200 knots, then it simply vanished from the scope while still visible to the eye. Another climbed vertically from 5,000 to 30,000 feet in under five seconds. No jet can do that. They were playing with us."
– Mirage 2000 pilot (debrief summary, paraphrased)

The pilots’ frustration is clear in every debrief. They were sent up armed, ready to intercept, but the objects simply outclassed them, faster, more agile, untouchable. The fact that they never showed hostility only made the encounter more mysterious.

"From the ground we saw clusters of lights moving in formation, then splitting apart and rejoining. No sound, no trail. They hovered over the city for minutes at a time. Everyone was looking up. It wasn’t a meteor shower or flares."
– Ground witness in São Paulo (collective account from May 1986 reports)

Ground reports added another layer. Thousands of civilians in São Paulo, Rio, and surrounding areas watched the same lights that night. The objects weren’t just high-altitude blips, they came low enough to be seen clearly by ordinary people, yet no one could identify them.

The Official Response & Investigation

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) conducted a formal investigation. Colonel Ozires Silva held a public press conference on May 23, 1986, admitting the objects were real, solid, and exhibited flight characteristics beyond known technology. Radar data, pilot reports, and ground sightings were collected. No conventional explanation was found.

The case was classified for many years, with some documents later released. The FAB has never retracted the admission. This remains one of the few cases where a major air force openly acknowledged a large-scale UAP event.

Legacy in 2026

More than 40 years later, the Night of the UFOs remains one of the strongest military UAP cases ever documented. Twenty-one objects tracked by radar, pursued by jets, seen by pilots and ground witnesses, and publicly acknowledged by the Brazilian Air Force. Colonel Ozires Silva’s press conference is historic, a government admitting something unexplained was in its airspace.

In 2026, with UFO/UAP disclosures accelerating worldwide, Brazil’s 1986 event is seen as proof that non-human intelligence has been interacting with militaries for decades. The silence after the initial openness only strengthens the belief that the full truth is still protected. This is not just a sighting, it’s a demonstration that something intelligent was here, and it outmatched some of our best aircraft at the time.
