Quick Info
On the night of September 10, 1954, railroad worker Marius Dewilde was at his home near the railway tracks in Quarouble, northern France, when he saw a dark object land on the tracks. Two small beings emerged and directed a bright green light at him, paralyzing him completely. The case left physical traces on the railway sleepers and remains one of France’s most credible early close encounters.
Marius Dewilde was a respected local man with no interest in UFOs. His straightforward account, combined with measurable physical traces, made this one of the strongest landing cases of the 1954 European wave.
A Quiet Evening by the Railway
Quarouble, now a commune, was a small village in northern France near the Belgian border. Marius Dewilde, 34 years old at the time, worked as a metalworker and lived with his wife and young son in a modest house right beside the railway line. On the evening of September 10, 1954, he was relaxing at home when his dog began barking furiously.
The Object Lands
Marius stepped outside and saw a dark, massive object shaped like a lens or flattened sphere resting on the railway tracks about 30 meters away. It was roughly 6 meters wide and 3 meters high. As he approached, two small beings emerged from the object. They were about 1 meter tall, wearing diving suits with helmets, and moved with a stiff, mechanical gait.
“I saw two small beings, no taller than a child of ten, wearing helmets and suits like divers. They were standing near the object.”
— Marius Dewilde
When he got closer, one of the beings pointed a device at him. A bright green light flashed, and Marius felt completely paralyzed. He could not move or speak, but remained fully conscious.
The Beings and the Light
As Marius Dewilde got closer, he could see two small figures standing beside the dark object. They were roughly one meter tall, wearing what looked like diving suits with helmets that completely covered their heads. Their suits were dark and appeared to be made of a shiny, flexible material. The beings moved with a stiff, almost mechanical gait. One of them raised a small device and a brilliant green beam of light shot toward Dewilde.
“The light was very bright, greenish in colour. I felt an intense heat and suddenly I couldn’t move at all. My arms and legs were completely paralyzed.”
— Marius Dewilde
The paralysis was total but painless. Dewilde remained fully conscious and could see and hear everything clearly. The two beings stood still for a moment, observing him, then turned and re-entered the craft without hurry. The green light switched off as soon as they were inside.
Physical Traces Left Behind
The next morning, Dewilde and several neighbors examined the railway tracks. They found four deep, perfectly circular impressions on the heavy wooden sleepers where the object had rested. Each mark was about 30 cm in diameter and pressed several centimeters into the wood. The ballast stones beneath the sleepers were unusually compressed, and some showed signs of scorching or glazing as if exposed to intense heat. The French police and Air Force investigators measured the marks and took numerous photographs. Soil and wood samples were sent for laboratory analysis, which revealed unusual compression patterns that could not be explained by any ordinary weight or impact.
“The impressions were perfectly circular and pressed deeply into the sleepers. It was clear that something very heavy had rested there.”
— Police officer at the scene
The traces remained visible for weeks and became one of the strongest pieces of physical evidence in the case.
The Investigation
The French authorities responded quickly. Local police arrived the same morning, followed by investigators from the French Air Force and civilian ufologists. They interviewed Marius Dewilde multiple times and found him to be calm, consistent, and sincere. He had no prior interest in UFOs and never sought publicity or financial gain. The impressions on the railway sleepers were carefully measured, photographed, and sampled. Laboratory tests showed the wood had been subjected to sudden intense pressure and localized heating that could not be replicated by any known conventional means.
The case was taken seriously enough that it was included in official French UFO files. Dewilde passed every credibility check and remained consistent in his account for the rest of his life. The combination of an eyewitness with a solid reputation, immediate official response, and measurable physical traces made the Quarouble incident one of the strongest landing cases of the famous 1954 European UFO wave.
Timeline of the Marius Dewilde Encounter
- Evening of September 10th 1954 – Marius sees a dark object land on the railway tracks near his home.
- The encounter – Two small beings emerge and paralyze him with a bright green light.
- Departure – The object rises silently and flies away.
- Next morning – Deep impressions are found on the railway sleepers.
- Following days – Police and Air Force investigate the site and interview Marius.
Why This Case Is Still Important
The Marius Dewilde encounter is considered one of the strongest early European landing cases because of the clear physical traces on the railway sleepers, the credibility of the witness, and the rapid official response. It happened during the famous 1954 European UFO wave and helped establish the pattern of close encounters with small beings and physical evidence. Today over 70 years after the event Marius’s simple, straightforward account has stood the test of time. Please watch the video below, it's one of the best on any UFO/Alien encounter.

What Do You Think?
After reading, and watching the excellent video above, of Marius Dewilde’s account and the physical evidence left on the tracks, what’s your gut reaction? Do you think he really encountered a landed craft and two small beings, or could there be another explanation? Why do you think the object chose to land right on the railway line? This is one of France’s classic early close encounter events, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
