The Night Everything Changed
It was a cold November night. Linda went to bed wearing a white nightgown. Sometime after midnight she woke up paralyzed, unable to move or speak. She felt a presence in the room. Three small grey beings with large black eyes appeared beside her bed. They floated her body right out of the apartment through the closed window, 12 stories above the street, and into a bright beam of light that took her up into a waiting craft hovering near the Brooklyn Bridge.
Inside the ship, she said she was examined on a table. The beings communicated telepathically and seemed to be performing some kind of medical procedure. She was terrified but couldn’t fight back. Eventually they returned her to her bedroom, where she woke up feeling disoriented and exhausted.
The Witnesses Who Claimed They Saw It
This is what sets the case apart from so many others. Budd Hopkins claimed he eventually found more than 20 people who said they saw something that night. The most dramatic testimonies came from two security guards who called themselves "Richard" and "Dan." They said they were parked under the FDR Drive protecting a very important dignitary, widely believed to be then-UN Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar. They described seeing a woman in a white nightgown floating out of a building and into a UFO, along with three small beings.
Another witness, a woman driving across the Brooklyn Bridge, reportedly saw the same scene and became so upset she had to pull over. Hopkins said the witnesses' accounts matched in key details even though they didn’t know each other.
The Aftermath and the Kidnappings
A year and a half later, in 1991, Linda said two men (the same "Richard" and "Dan") kidnapped her off the street, put her in a car, and interrogated her for hours about what she remembered from the abduction. They even took her to a beach house on Long Island and made her wear a white nightgown similar to the one she had on during the event.
She told Hopkins she was terrified during these encounters, but the men seemed more interested in finding out what she knew than in harming her. The whole thing added another layer of government or intelligence involvement to the story.

Why This Case Still Divides Everyone
Budd Hopkins wrote a whole book about it called *Witnessed* and called it one of the most important abduction cases in history because of the independent witnesses. But not everyone bought it. His ex-wife Carol Rainey later became skeptical and questioned how the investigation was handled. Some critics pointed out that none of the witnesses ever came forward publicly with their real names, and the security guards only communicated through letters.
