- Immediate aftermath The institute staff are stunned. The photo is studied internally. No conventional explanation fits, not a plane, not a balloon, not lens flare or reflection. The negative is kept in secure archives. The case is not publicized at the time.
- 1971–1990 The photo circulates quietly among Costa Rican officials and a few international researchers. No public release. The negative remains in government custody.
- 1990s–2000s UFO researchers (including William Steinman and others) obtain copies of the photo. Computer enhancements and analyses show no signs of hoaxing or tampering. Size estimates: 100–200 feet diameter based on altitude, shadow, and lake reference points.
