The La Rochelle Incident (1981): Clifford Muchena and the Rolling Fireball at Mutare

Quick Info

On the night of August 15, 1981, at the La Rochelle forestry station near Mutare in Zimbabwe, Clifford Muchena and a group of workers witnessed something extraordinary. A large glowing fireball rolled across the lawns, climbed walls, and behaved as if it had intelligence. Also seen were 3 small beings "with big heads", who stared at Clifford and the workers, before they too vanished out of sight.

The event left everyone stunned and became one of the most intriguing UFO cases in Zimbabwean history. What made this sighting special was the number of witnesses and the strange, almost playful behavior of the glowing sphere. It wasn’t just your normal light in the sky, this object interacted with the environment in ways that still puzzle researchers today.

A Peaceful Evening at La Rochelle

La Rochelle was a quiet Forestry Commission station about 9 kilometers from Mutare, the third-largest city in Zimbabwe. On that warm August evening, Clifford was in charge of a small group of workers that had finished their duties for the day and were relaxing. Then the night took a very strange turn to say the least.

The Appearance of the Fireball

Suddenly, they noticed a large glowing orange sphere of light rolling across the lawns and moving over and around buildings. It moved smoothly and deliberately from one side of the property to the other. The group watched in complete shock as the bright orange-red ball continued its journey.

“We watched the the fireball move from one side of the lawns to the other.”
— Clifford Muchena

What happened next was even more astonishing. The fireball didn’t stop at obstacles, it simply rolled up the sloping lawn and began climbing the wall of one of the buildings as if gravity didn’t apply to it.

The Fireball Climbs the Wall

The glowing sphere rolled smoothly up the vertical wall with ease. It moved up until it reached the top, where it seemed to pause for a moment as if taking in the view, and then burst into flames or exploding in a bright flash. Neither the wall or building was reportedly damaged in any way. Clifford and the other workers stood frozen, eyes wide open in shock, trying to process what they had all just seen.

Clifford Sees the Three Beings

After the glowing fireball had climbed the wall and disappeared in a burst of light, the night became quiet again. Clifford Muchena and the other workers stood there for a moment, trying to process what they had just seen. Then something even more startling happened.

Clifford looked toward the area where the fireball had vanished and saw three small humanoid figures standing near the building. They were about four to five feet tall, with large heads and slender bodies. They appeared to be observing the workers from a short distance.

“After the ball of fire disappeared, I saw three small beings standing there. They had big heads and were looking at us.”
— Clifford Muchena

The beings did not approach or make any aggressive movements. They simply stood there watching. Clifford and the others felt a mix of fear and curiosity. Before anyone could react further, the three figures slowly faded away or moved out of sight. The entire encounter left everyone deeply shaken.

Multiple Witnesses and Consistent Accounts

Clifford was not alone witnessesing this crazy event. Several other workers also saw the same thing and gave matching descriptions when interviewed later by researcher Cynthia Hind. Everyone agreed on the size, color, and intelligent movement of the object, the beings etc. None of them had any background in UFOs or had any reason to invent such a story.

Timeline of the La Rochelle Incident

  • August 15, 1981 – Evening – Clifford Muchena and his team are at the La Rochelle forestry station near Mutare.
  • After dark – A large glowing fireball appears and rolls across the lawns.
  • Main event – The sphere climbs the wall of a building and bursts into flames at the top.
  • Immediately after – Witnesses discuss what they saw and remain deeply affected.
  • Later investigation – Cynthia Hind and other researchers interview the group and document consistent testimony.

Investigation and Legacy

The case was investigated by well-known Zimbabwean UFO researcher Cynthia Hind, who published details in UFO Afrinews. The witnesses stuck to their story over time, and no conventional explanation (such as a prank, vehicle lights, or natural phenomenon) has ever fully accounted for the intelligent movement and wall-climbing behavior. In the video below Cynthia talks about the event and Clifford in detail.

Why This Case Remains Intriguing

The La Rochelle incident stands out because of the multiple credible witnesses to the event, the close proximity to the object, and the bizarre physical behavior of the glowing object. Clifford seems like a nice normal dude when he is talked about it and doesn't seem like he'd be making this up.

The object, whatever it was, interacted with the environment in ways that suggested intelligence. For many who study African UFO cases, this event is a quiet but powerful reminder that this strange event is just 1 of multitudes of strange things that have been happening in Zimbabwe’s skies for a very, very long time.

What Do You Think?

After reading about Clifford Muchena and the La Rochelle incident, and watching the video above, what’s your reaction? Do you think the group really saw a glowing intelligent fireball that climbed walls, or could there be another explanation?

Not many people seem to buy the "Ball Lightning" explanation as the evening was clam and quiet so it would be amazing if ball lightning can spontaneously appear, right? But if it was something unknown, what do you think it was doing there? This case always leaves people with more questions than answers, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on it are.
