The Kofu UFO Incident: Japan’s Classic Close Encounter of the Third Kind in 1975

Quick Info

On the evening of February 23 1975, two seven-year-old boys in Kofu, Japan saw a bright orange dome-shaped UFO land in a vineyard. Two small humanoid beings emerged and one touched a boy on the shoulder. The next day investigators found three clear landing marks. It remains one of Japan’s best-documented Close Encounters of the Third Kind with physical traces.

The Evening of February 23 1975

It was a cold winter evening. Seven-year-old Masato Kawano and his friend Katsuhiro Yamahata were playing near a vineyard in the Kofu suburb. The sun had already set and the sky was dark. Suddenly the boys noticed a bright orange light moving slowly across the sky.

The Beings Emerge

The glowing orange object descended smoothly and landed gently among the vines about 50 meters away. It was dome-shaped, metallic in appearance, and roughly the size of a small car. Three thick, sturdy legs extended from the bottom to support it on the ground. The boys stood frozen, watching in complete amazement as a door slowly opened on the side of the craft.

“They looked like little people with big heads and shiny clothes.”
- Masato Kawano

Two small humanoid beings stepped out. They were only about 1.2 to 1.3 meters tall, had very large round heads, big dark eyes, and wore shiny silver suits. Their skin looked pale and smooth, and they had no visible mouth or nose. The beings moved slowly and deliberately, almost as if they were studying their surroundings. The boys, as you can imagine, were terrified but could not run. They stayed rooted to the spot as the beings began walking toward them...

The Touch

One of the beings walked straight up to Masato. Without saying a word, it slowly reached out and placed its hand on the boy’s shoulder. Masato later described the hand as cold and hard, almost like metal or plastic. The touch lasted only a few seconds, but it left a deep impression. The being did not speak, yet the boys both felt an intense wave of fear mixed with curiosity.

“It touched my shoulder. It was cold and hard, like metal.”
- Masato Kawano

After the touch, the two beings turned around and calmly walked back into the craft. The door closed behind them and the object lifted off silently into the night sky, disappearing quickly from view.

Physical Evidence the Next Day

The following morning, investigators arrived at the vineyard. They discovered three clear circular landing marks pressed deeply into the soil, each about 30 cm in diameter and arranged in a perfect triangle. The soil inside the marks was unusually compacted and hard compared to the surrounding ground.

“The three landing marks formed a perfect triangle and the soil inside them was much harder than the rest of the field.”
- Local investigators

Small pieces of a strange metallic substance were also found scattered near the site. The marks remained visible for several weeks. Photographs were taken and soil samples were collected. The physical evidence made this case stand out among Japanese UFO reports.

The Investigation

The case was thoroughly investigated by members of the Japan Space Phenomena Society and other local ufologists. The two boys were interviewed separately on multiple occasions and their stories remained remarkably consistent. Both drew nearly identical pictures of the craft and the beings without seeing each other’s drawings.

“The boys were interviewed separately and their accounts matched almost perfectly.”
- Investigators’ report

The landing marks were carefully measured, photographed, and documented by several researchers. No conventional explanation, such as a helicopter, balloon, or known aircraft, could account for the event. The combination of eyewitness testimony from two young children and the physical landing traces made the Kofu incident one of the strongest Close Encounters of the Third Kind recorded in Japan.

Why the Kofu Incident Is So Important

The Kofu case stands out because of the very young age of the witnesses, the consistency of their independent accounts, and the presence of clear physical traces the next day. It is considered one of the strongest Close Encounters of the Third Kind ever reported in Japan and continues to be studied by researchers today.

What Do You Think?

After reading the details of the Kofu incident, and watching the great video interview above, the bright orange craft, the small beings, the touch on the shoulder, and the physical landing marks, what’s your gut reaction to this event? Do you believe these two young boys really saw something extraordinary, or could there be another explanation?

The two boys in the intervew seem to be regular kids that experienced something truely extrordinary that day, I belive them. This 1975 Japanese case remains one of the most compelling Close Encounters of the Third Kind on record. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
