Joe Simonton’s Pancakes: A Wisconsin Farmer Got Breakfast from Aliens

Quick Info

On April 18, 1961, a 60-year-old retired chicken farmer named Joe Simonton was in his yard in Eagle River, Wisconsin, when a silver saucer-shaped craft landed right in front of him. Three small humanoid beings stepped out and handed him four hot pancakes. He ate one, and said it tasted like cardboard.

This might sound like the plot of a comedy sketch, but Joe was dead serious. He reported the incident to the Air Force, and Project Blue Book actually investigated it. The case remains one of the strangest and most memorable “close encounter of the third kind” stories ever recorded.

Who Was Joe Simonton?

Joe Simonton was a plainspoken, no-nonsense man. At 60 years old, he lived a quiet life on a small property near Eagle River, Wisconsin. He had retired from raising chickens and spent his days doing odd jobs and enjoying the peace of the countryside. He wasn’t into UFOs, wasn’t looking for attention, and had no history of telling tall tales. By all accounts, he was just an ordinary, honest guy who liked to keep to himself.

The Morning Everything Changed

It was around 11 o’clock in the morning on April 18, 1961. Joe was outside doing some chores when he heard a loud, high-pitched whistling sound. He looked up and saw a bright silver object descending rapidly from the sky. It looked like two saucers pressed together, about 12 feet across and 4 feet high. The craft landed gently in his yard, just 50 feet away from where he was standing.

The Three Small Beings

A hatch opened on the side of the craft and three small humanoid figures stepped out. They were about 5 feet tall, had dark olive-colored skin, and wore dark blue or black one-piece suits with turtleneck collars. Their heads were covered with what looked like helmets or tight-fitting caps. They didn’t speak out loud, but one of them made a gesture as if asking for something.

The Pancakes

Joe watched in amazement as one of the beings reached inside the craft and handed him four freshly cooked pancakes. They were about three inches across, hot to the touch, and looked perfectly normal. Joe, not knowing what else to do, took them. The being then pointed to his mouth, as if asking for water. Joe went inside, filled a jug with water, and brought it back. The being took the jug, poured some water into a small container inside the craft, and handed the jug back.

“They looked like regular people, only smaller. They didn’t say a word, but they seemed friendly enough.”
— Joe Simonton

The whole interaction was calm and almost polite. After a few moments, the beings stepped back into the craft. The hatch closed, the object rose vertically with the same loud whistling sound, and shot straight up into the sky until it disappeared.

Timeline of Events

  • Around 11:00 a.m. – Joe Simonton hears a loud whistling sound and sees a silver saucer-shaped craft land in his yard.
  • Immediate encounter – Three small humanoid beings emerge from the craft.
  • The exchange – One being hands Joe four hot pancakes and gestures for water.
  • The departure – The beings return to the craft, which lifts off vertically and disappears into the sky.
  • Same day – Joe contacts the local sheriff and later the Air Force to report the incident.
  • Following weeks – Project Blue Book investigators visit Joe and take samples of the pancakes for analysis.

What Did the Pancakes Taste Like?

Joe actually ate one of the pancakes right away. He later told investigators it tasted like “cardboard” or “sawdust”, dry, flavorless, and not very pleasant. The other three pancakes were saved and later examined by the Air Force.

The Air Force Investigation

Because Joe was a credible witness with no history of strange claims, the Air Force took the report seriously. Project Blue Book sent investigators to interview him and collect the remaining pancakes. Laboratory analysis showed the pancakes were made of ordinary earthly ingredients, wheat flour, buckwheat, and other common baking materials. There was nothing extraterrestrial about their chemical makeup.

Still, the investigators could not explain how the craft had appeared, how the beings had communicated, or why they would give Joe pancakes. The case was officially left as “unidentified.”

Why This Case Is Still So Memorable

Joe Simonton’s story is one of those rare cases that’s both completely bizarre and strangely wholesome. A retired farmer gets handed pancakes by aliens and actually eats one. He never tried to make money from the story, never changed his account, and always seemed genuinely puzzled by what happened. It’s the kind of encounter that makes you smile and scratch your head at the same time, and it’s become one of the most beloved “close encounter” tales in UFO history.

What Do You Think?

After reading Joe’s story, what’s your reaction? Do you think three small beings really gave him pancakes from a landed UFO, or could there be another explanation? If it really happened, why do you think they chose to give him food? This one always makes people smile, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
