Joe McMoneagle: Remote Viewing Beings on Mars in 1,000,000 BC

Quick Info

In 1984, U.S. Army remote viewer Joe McMoneagle was given a sealed envelope with coordinates and a date: Mars, one million years ago. What he described during the declassified Stargate Project session was a dying ancient civilization struggling to survive as their planet’s atmosphere collapsed. Tall, thin beings sheltered inside truely massive structures while enourmous dust storms raged outside.

Joe, also known as Remote Viewer #001, was in the highly classified Stargate Program. His Mars session, conducted under strict scientific protocols, produced vivid, consistent details that still spark debate today. The session remains one of the most intriguing and controversial remote viewing records ever released by the CIA.

Who Was Joe McMoneagle?

Joe McMoneagle served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, including time as an intelligence officer. After a near-death experience in 1970, he began having spontaneous psychic impressions. In 1978 he was recruited into the Army’s secret remote viewing program, later known as Stargate. He became one of the most respected and accurate viewers in the project, working on hundreds of missions for intelligence agencies. After retiring in 1984, he continued consulting and writing about his experiences.

The Stargate Project

During the Cold War, the U.S. military and CIA ran a classified program to explore whether psychic abilities could be used for intelligence gathering. Remote viewing, the ability to perceive distant or hidden targets using only the mind, was the main focus. The program ran for over 20 years and involved rigorous scientific protocols, including double-blind testing. Joe was one of the top viewers in the entire program. In 1984, near the end of his military service, he was given a final high-interest target.

The Mars Session – May 22, 1984

McMoneagle was handed a sealed envelope containing only coordinates and the date “1 million years B.C.” He had no idea the target was Mars. Once in the viewing room, he began describing what he saw. He reported a barren, dusty landscape with extremely thin air. He saw huge, pyramid-like structures and underground shelters. Inside them were tall, thin humanoid beings with large heads who appeared to be the last survivors of a dying civilization. They seemed to be waiting or in a state of suspended animation as their planet slowly lost its atmosphere.

“I see very tall, thin people… They look almost like they’re in some kind of trouble. The atmosphere is very thin… There are structures that look like they were built to last a very long time.”
— Joe McMoneagle during the session

He described massive dust storms, a once-thriving civilization that had been forced underground, and a deep sense of sadness or resignation among the beings. The session transcript and sketches were later declassified and are publicly available to read online in the CIA’s reading room.

The Details That Still Intrigue Researchers

Joe’s descriptions included technical observations that were remarkable for 1984. He spoke of the beings attempts to preserve their culture and knowledge, their use of advanced technology to survive, and the slow death of the planet’s ecosystem. He also mentioned large obelisk-like structures and what appeared to be some form of energy or transportation system. Many of the details he provided aligned with later Mars probe findings about the planet’s ancient climate and geological features.

Timeline of the Mars Remote Viewing

  • 1978–1984 – Joe McMoneagle serves as a remote viewer in the U.S. Army’s Stargate Project.
  • May 22, 1984 – McMoneagle conducts the Mars session under controlled, double-blind conditions.
  • Post-1984 – McMoneagle retires from the Army and begins speaking and writing about his experiences.
  • 1990s–2000s – The session transcript and sketches are declassified and become publicly available.
  • Today – The Mars viewing remains one of the most discussed and debated sessions from the entire Stargate program.

Why This Session Still Matters

The Joe McMoneagle Mars session stands out because it was conducted under strict scientific protocols by a highly trained and tested remote viewer. The level of detail, emotional tone, and consistency of the descriptions have kept researchers and the public fascinated for decades. Whether one believes remote viewing is real or not, the session raises profound questions about consciousness, the possibility of viewing across time and space, and what ancient Mars might have looked like when it still had a thick atmosphere and liquid water. It remains a compelling piece of the larger Stargate story and one of the most thought-provoking remote viewing records ever released.

What Do You Think?

After reading Joe McMoneagle’s Mars session story, and watching the great AREA52 video on this event above, what’s your reaction? Do you think he genuinely perceived an ancient Martian civilization through remote viewing, or could there be another explanation? If the session was accurate, what do you think happened to those beings?

I remember a few years ago I watched my first video on this story and it's stuck with me ever since, there's something about it that makes it seem... real?. I not sure how to decribe it to be honest. This is one of the most intriguing declassified remote viewing records I've ever heard. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
