The Delphos UFO Sighting: The Glowing Ring That Wouldn’t Wash Away

Quick Info

On the evening of November 2, 1971, the Johnson family in Delphos, Kansas saw a bright glowing object descend and land in their sheep pen. The next morning they discovered a strange glowing ring on the ground that would not wash away and actually repelled water for months. It remains one of the best-documented physical trace UFO cases in history.

What makes this case special is the clear physical evidence that scientists actually studied, combined with multiple credible witnesses who had no interest in UFOs.

A Quiet Farm Evening in Kansas

Delphos was (and still is) a small farming town in north-central Kansas. On November 2, 1971, 16-year-old Ronald Johnson was out doing chores with his dog when the sky suddenly lit up. His parents, Erma and Durel Johnson, were inside the house. It was a typical fall evening, cool, quiet, and uneventful until that moment.

The Sighting

Ronald looked up and saw a bright, mushroom-shaped object descending rapidly. It was glowing intensely with a mix of red, orange, and blue light. The object landed in the sheep pen about 75 feet away from him. It made a loud rumbling sound as it touched down. Ronald was so startled he ran back to the house to get his parents.

“It was brighter than the sun. It lit up the whole yard like it was daytime.”
— Ronald Johnson

When the family came outside, the object had already lifted off and was hovering just above the trees. They watched it move slowly away before it disappeared into the distance.

The Glowing Ring

The next morning, the Johnsons went back to the sheep pen and found something extraordinary: a perfect circular ring about 8 feet in diameter glowing faintly on the ground. The soil inside the ring was dry and crusty, while the ground outside was still damp from recent rain. When they tried to wash the ring away with water, the water simply beaded up and rolled off as if the soil had become waterproof.

Detailed Soil Analysis

News of the glowing ring spread quickly. Soil samples were taken from inside and outside the ring and sent to several independent laboratories for analysis. The results were highly unusual. The soil inside the ring showed a significant increase in certain minerals and a strange white, fibrous material that resembled tiny threads or hairs. Most notably, the ring remained visible and water-repellent for many weeks. Even months later, the affected soil still behaved differently from the surrounding ground.

One of the most striking findings was that water would not soak into the ring at all. Researchers poured water on the affected soil and watched it form perfect beads that rolled off like mercury on glass. This hydrophobic effect lasted for several months. Laboratory tests also revealed that the soil inside the ring had a higher concentration of calcium and magnesium, along with changes in its crystalline structure that suggested exposure to intense heat or some form of energy that normal burning could not explain.

“The changes in the soil were not consistent with any known natural or man-made process we could identify at the time.”
— Soil scientist involved in the analysis

Some researchers suggested the ring might have been caused by a plasma discharge or an unknown energy field that altered the molecular structure of the soil. The white fibrous material found in the samples was never conclusively identified, adding another layer of mystery to the case.

Timeline of the Delphos Event

  • November 2, 1971 – Evening – Ronald Johnson sees a bright glowing object land in the sheep pen.
  • Immediate aftermath – The family watches the object hover and then depart.
  • Next morning – The glowing ring is discovered on the ground.
  • Following weeks – The ring remains visible and repels water. Soil samples are collected and tested by multiple labs.
  • Months later – The unusual properties of the ring are still detectable, including the hydrophobic effect and altered mineral content.

Why This Case Is So Important

The Delphos case is considered one of the strongest physical trace UFO events because the evidence was examined by scientists rather than just reported by witnesses. The glowing ring, the water-repellent soil, the unusual chemical composition, and the long-lasting effects have never been fully explained by any conventional cause. For many researchers, it stands as powerful evidence that something truly unknown interacted with the ground that night.

What Do You Think?

After reading the full details of the Delphos sighting, and watching the video above on the event, what’s your reaction? Do you think the Johnson family really saw a UFO land and leave a physical trace that scientists couldn’t explain, or could there be a more ordinary explanation? If it was truly unknown, what do you think the object was doing there? This is one of the strongest physical trace cases I’ve covered so far, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
