Quick Info
On a clear spring day in 1955, an Air Force pilot named Robert Willingham was flying over West Texas when he spotted something extraordinary, a glowing object moving at incredible speed. He gave chase, only to watch it crash violently just across the Rio Grande near Del Rio. What he saw next would stay with him for the rest of his life.
This is the story of the Del Rio UFO crash, often called “the other Roswell”, a case that involves radar tracking, a daring pursuit, a crashed saucer, and a military recovery operation that was kept secret for decades.
The Cold War Sky Over Texas
It was May 6, 1955. The Cold War was at its peak, and American pilots were on constant alert. Lieutenant Colonel Robert B. Willingham, a decorated veteran of World War II and the Korean War, was flying an F-86 Sabre jet on a routine training mission. He was an experienced fighter pilot who had flown many combat missions. Nothing prepared him for what happened that day.
The Chase Begins
While flying over West Texas, Willingham suddenly picked up a fast-moving object on his radar. It was traveling at an estimated 2,000 miles per hour, far faster than any known aircraft of the era. Curious and following protocol, he turned to pursue it. The object was so bright it looked like a star seen through a telescope. It streaked past him, then made a sharp 90-degree turn that no conventional plane could perform.
“It blazed across the sky past us... then suddenly it began to wobble and descend rapidly.”
— Lt. Col. Robert Willingham
Willingham pushed his jet to its limits trying to keep up with the mysterious craft as it performed maneuvers that defied everything he knew about aviation.
The Crash Near Del Rio
Willingham followed the object as it plunged toward the Rio Grande River, the border between Texas and Mexico. He watched in stunned silence as the craft slammed into the ground just south of Langtry, Texas, right on the Mexican side. It dug a long furrow through the earth and came to rest wedged into a sandy bluff.
Willingham Returns to the Site
Later that day, Willingham swapped his jet for a small single-engine plane and flew back to the crash site with a partner. From the air they could see the wreckage clearly: a large, silver, disc-shaped object about 25 to 30 feet in diameter. It was embedded in the side of a hill. They landed nearby and approached on foot. The craft had a domed canopy that had broken off and lay in the dirt a short distance away.
Willingham claimed he picked up a small piece of the wreckage. It was incredibly light yet extremely strong, unlike any metal he had ever seen. He kept it as a souvenir for years.
The Military Response
Within a short time, military personnel arrived in force. They quickly cordoned off the area, brought in heavy equipment, and began recovering the wreckage. Willingham said the operation was highly secretive. The military presence was overwhelming, and civilians were kept far away. The wreckage was loaded onto trucks and taken away under heavy guard.
Timeline of Events
- Morning of May 6th 1955 – Lt. Col. Robert Willingham is flying an F-86 Sabre jet over West Texas on a training mission.
- Mid-flight – He picks up a fast-moving object on radar traveling at extreme speed.
- The Pursuit – Willingham chases the glowing object as it makes impossible maneuvers.
- The Crash – The object crashes near Del Rio, Texas, just across the Rio Grande on the Mexican side.
- Afternoon of May 6th 1955 – Willingham returns to the site in a small plane and sees the saucer-shaped wreckage embedded in a bluff. He picks up a peice of the wreckage.
- A few Hours later – U.S. military arrives in force, cordons off the area, and begins recovery operations.
- Following days/weeks – Wreckage is removed under heavy secrecy. Willingham keeps a small piece of metal as a souvenir.
The Aftermath and Lasting Mystery
Willingham kept quiet about the event for many years. It was only in the 1970s and 1980s that he began speaking publicly about what he saw that day in 1955. He always maintained the same story and never tried to profit from it. The case has been investigated by multiple researchers, and while some details have been questioned over time, the core account from a highly decorated pilot remains compelling.
To this day, no official explanation has ever been given that fully accounts for what Willingham and others reported that day. The Del Rio crash is often called “the other Roswell”, a forgotten but powerful chapter in the long history of military UFO encounters.

Why This Case Still Matters
The Del Rio incident stands out because it involves a trained military pilot who pursued the object, saw it crash, and later examined the wreckage. It happened during the height of the Cold War, when the U.S. military was extremely sensitive about unidentified objects in American airspace. The combination of radar data, visual confirmation, and physical recovery makes it one of the most intriguing crash cases of the 1950s.
What Do You Think?
After reading the full story of the Del Rio crash, and watching UAP Gerb's excellent video on the event, what’s your honest reaction? Do you think Lt. Col. Willingham really chased and saw a crashed UFO, or could there be another explanation? There's something about this event that makes me think it really did happen exactly as describe. This event always leaves people wondering, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
