Quick Info
On the night of October 27 1974, the Day family were driving home through Aveley, Essex when they drove into a glowing green mist. They lost more than three hours of time. Under hypnosis, John and Sue Day recalled being taken aboard a craft and examined by strange beings. This remains one of the most detailed and credible family abduction cases in British UFO history.
The Drive Home
John Day, his wife Sue, and their three children were returning from a visit to relatives in Harold Hill. It was a normal Sunday evening until they spotted an unusual oval-shaped blue light moving across the sky ahead of them.
Inside the Green Mist
As they continued driving, the car suddenly entered a thick, glowing green mist that appeared out of nowhere. The mist was so dense it felt almost solid. The radio began crackling loudly and then died completely. The engine started coughing and losing power. John described the silence inside the car as unnatural, like the whole world had gone quiet.
The children in the back seat became very scared and asked what was happening. Sue tried to calm them while John struggled to keep the car on the road. The green mist seemed to swirl and glow with its own light. Time felt distorted. John later said it felt like they were driving through something that wasn’t normal air.
“The mist was glowing green and it felt thick, like we were driving through soup. Everything went completely silent.”
- John Day
Then, just as suddenly as it appeared, they came out of the mist. But something was wrong. They were several miles further down the road than they should have been, and more than three hours had vanished from their lives.
The Aftermath Begins
When the family finally arrived home they were all exhausted and confused. In the following weeks and months strange things started happening. Objects in the house would move by themselves. They heard unexplained knocking sounds and footsteps when no one was there. The children began having vivid nightmares and talking about unusual dreams involving bright lights and strange figures.
“After that night the house never felt the same again. Things would move. We’d hear noises. It was frightening.”
- Sue Day
John and Sue both suffered repeated episodes of sleep paralysis. They felt watched and uneasy in their own home. The whole family became increasingly withdrawn and anxious. It was only after hearing about other similar cases that they decided to seek help through hypnosis.
Hypnosis Sessions Reveal the Truth
In 1977, after much hesitation, John and Sue agreed to hypnotic regression sessions with investigator Leonard Wilder. What emerged was astonishing. Both independently recalled the same core events. Their car had been lifted by a beam of light into a large craft. They were separated from each other and from the children during the experience.
“I remember floating upwards towards the light. It was the strangest feeling, like being weightless.”
- Sue Day
The sessions, as you can imagine, were very emotional and draining. John and Sue both became upset when describing the medical examinations. The details they gave matched closely, even though they were hypnotized separately. This consistency gave the case significant weight among researchers.
The Beings They Met
John described two distinct types of beings. The first were tall humanoids wearing tight-fitting silver one-piece suits and helmets. They seemed to be in charge. The second type were smaller, with bird-like features, large dark eyes, and what looked like feathers or scales on their heads. These smaller beings carried out most of the medical procedures.
“They looked like birds... with big eyes and sort of feathers or something on their heads.”
- John Day
The beings communicated both verbally and telepathically. They appeared curious rather than hostile. John said they examined him with bright scanning lights and seemed particularly interested in human biology and emotions. Sue recalled feeling a strange sense of calm during parts of the examination despite her fear.
Timeline of the Aveley Abduction

Why This Case Is So Important
The Aveley Abduction stands out because it involved an entire family who all remembered parts of the event. The accounts stayed consistent under hypnosis, and the long-term changes in their lifestyle and behavior were very noticeable. It is still regarded as one of the strongest and most intriguing abduction cases to come out of the United Kingdom.
