The Ängelholm UFO Landing: Sweden’s Early Close Encounter in 1946

Quick Info

On a warm spring evening in 1946, a young Swedish man named Gösta Carlsson went for a walk near Ängelholm and witnessed something that would change his life. A glowing disc-shaped object landed in a meadow, and he saw small beings moving around it. When the craft left, it left behind physical traces that remained visible for years.

This is one of the earliest well documented UFO landing cases in Europe, and comes before the "modern" UFO era began the UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947.

A Quiet Evening Walk

Gösta Carlsson, a regular normal dude, was 32 years old and lived in the small town of Ängelholm in southern Sweden. On the evening of May 18, 1946, he decided to take a walk in the countryside to enjoy the fresh air. The area was peaceful, with open meadows and pine forests, a typically beautiful area of Sweden. He had absolutley no interest in flying saucers, the term hadn’t even become popular yet.

The Glowing Disc Appears

As Gösta walked along a path, he suddenly noticed a strange glow in a nearby meadow. He moved closer and saw a large disc-shaped object resting on the grass. The craft was glowing with a soft, metallic light and had a dome on top. It was completely silent.

“I saw a glowing object that looked like a disc with a dome. It was resting on the ground.”
— Gösta Carlsson

Gösta stood there frozen in place, trying to understand what he was seeing. He saw the craft, that he described as roughly 15 to 20 meters in diameter, and observed small beings with large heads that appeared to be working either on the craft or an object on the ground beside it.

The Small Beings

Around the craft, Gösta noticed several small humanoid figures moving about. They appeared to be working on something near the object. They were about 1.2 to 1.5 meters tall, had large heads, and wore tight-fitting suits. They moved with purpose but did not seem to notice him at first.

The Craft Departs

After what seemed like only a few minutes, the beings returned to the craft and moved inside it. The object then began to glow brighter, rose silently into the air, and then accelerated rapidly before disappearing into the sky at incredible speed. Gösta stood there for a long time, trying to comprehend what had just happened. I'd of done the same.

Physical Traces Left Behind

After thinking about the event the whole night the next morning, Gösta returned to the site with friends this time. They found a clear circular depression in the grass where the craft had landed. The vegetation inside the circle was flattened and slightly burned. There were also strange marks that looked like landing gear imprints pressed into the ground. Remarkably the traces on the ground remained visible for several years after the event and attracted curious visitors from all over the world.

Timeline of the Ängelholm Landing

  • Evening on May 18, 1946 – Gösta Carlsson goes for a walk near Ängelholm and sees a glowing disc land in a meadow.
  • During the encounter – He observes small humanoid beings moving around the craft.
  • Departure – The object rises silently and flies away at high speed.
  • Next morning on May 19th, 1946 – Gösta returns with friends. They find a circular landing trace with flattened and burned grass.
  • Following years – The site becomes known locally, and Gösta builds a memorial there.

Gösta’s Later Life and the Memorial

Gösta Carlsson never tried to make money from his story. He remained consistent in his account for the rest of his life. Years later, he built a small memorial at the landing site, including a model of the craft and a plaque describing what he saw. The memorial still exists today and is visited by people interested in the case.

Why This Case Still Matters

The Ängelholm landing is significant because it happened in 1946, before the famous Kenneth Arnold sighting that kicked off the modern UFO era in 1947. It features a clear landing with physical traces and multiple consistent details from the main witness. For many researchers, it stands as one of the earliest credible close encounter cases in Europe.

What Do You Think?

After reading about Gösta Carlsson and the Ängelholm landing, and watching Fred's video above, what’s your reaction? Do you think he really saw a UFO land and small beings working around it, or could there be another explanation? If it was real, why do you think the craft chose that quiet Swedish meadow? Were the beings repairing the craft, maybe? I see no reason at all for Gösta to have made this up, so I choose to believe this event is 100% real. This early case always sparks interesting discussion, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
